East Gables Supportive Housing
Austin Design Cooperative worked with Valley Community Development Corporation to design a three-story low-income housing complex in Amherst, MA. Completed in September 2023, the project consists of 28 small studio apartments, several common areas, and two on-site staff offices—all of which are accessible. A third of the units are reserved for residents who have recently been unhoused, in an effort to provide affordable, stable housing as they transition into their next stage of life. It is sited on a village lot close to the town center and shopping areas. The building is all-electric and Phius-certified, meaning it was constructed to rigorous Passive House standards, which include advanced insulation, airtightness, and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery to achieve comfortable, ultra-efficient living (more details available here: https://www.phius.org/certified-project-database/east-gables).
